Eagles still look to Wilbert in NFL playoff crunch time
It’s been 37 years since the Philadelphia Eagles turned to an Abilene Christian University football legend to help them reach the Super Bowl. Two weeks ago, they did it again. Both moves turned out pretty well. Wilbert Montgomery (’77) was one of the honorary captains – along with Brian Dawkins – chosen by the team […]
Super Man: Gabriel soars to NFL stardom
The straightest line between the points of Mesquite, Texas, and NRG Stadium in Houston is 250 miles. Taylor Gabriel (’15) took the scenic route. Barely three years since completing his record-setting career at Abilene Christian University, Gabriel will be the latest Wildcat player to reach the Super Bowl when his Atlanta Falcons take on the […]
So long Shotwell: Mud, sweat and tears
EDITOR’S NOTE: This Saturday at 6 p.m., Abilene Christian University will play its last home football game at Shotwell Stadium. The historic venue will carry on as the place where Abilene and Abilene Cooper high schools play, but next fall ACU moves into new Wildcat Stadium for its first season of on-campus football in more than 50 years. […]

Long Story: How Ove got a leg up on history
The man who kicked the world’s longest field goal had never so much as seen an American football game six weeks before. On Abilene Christian University’s Homecoming weekend in 1976, Ove Johansson (’77) booted a 69-yarder through Shotwell Stadium’s south end zone uprights, eclipsing the record set earlier in the day and establishing one that […]
Tag Team: ACU great throws hat in radio ring
Stop me if you’ve heard this one. West Texas football legend becomes a college all-America, plays a little pro ball, takes up professional wrestling, during which time he builds a portfolio as a financial guru on network television while enjoying his off hours cutting grass on the field where he heads up a rugby program […]
West leads former Wildcats in NFL, CFL
The National Football League is the land of opportunity each season for several former Abilene Christian University football standouts, and when his proverbial moment in the sun arrived last year, Charcandrick West (’14) literally took the ball and ran with it. No one player on the 2015 Chiefs’ roster could have been expected to replace veteran Jamaal Charles when he […]
Wildcats are witnesses to NFL title history
For years, Wildcats from Abilene Christian University have had far more than a front-row seat at the annual championship game staged by the National Football League. On Sunday, one of them will have a lot to do with what you see and hear when the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers square off in Santa Clara, Calif., for […]
Former Wildcats pursue pro football careers
It’s always crunch time, so to speak, in National Football League training camps. But with the and only two preseason games remaining, many of the men toiling in the late August heat are playing not only for a job but perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Four former Wildcats are on NFL player […]
