A group of ACU staff and alumni gathered at the Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville, Florida, in October to celebrate Doug Ferguson (’83), one of the university’s 2019 Distinguished Alumni Citation recipients.

Ferguson’s friends and colleagues celebrated not only his successes as the Associated Press’s national golf writer, but the journey he has taken to achieve them.

“Doug is a storyteller, committed to capturing the excitement of the sport he loves,” Craig Fisher (’92), assistant vice president for alumni and university relations, said at the event. “For the last 20 years, he has brought the game of golf to life for millions of fans.”

During his tenure as national golf writer for the Associated Press, Ferguson has covered more than 500 golf events, and through the AP, his work has been picked up by hundreds of publications around the world. He often writes four pieces per day to cover major tournaments, which adds up to 100-hour work weeks during the season, and he has produced more than 1,100 stories for his column, “On the Fringe.”

“Doug’s accomplishments are remarkable and the accolades well-deserved,” Fisher said. “Alumni like Doug Ferguson embody the generosity, perseverance and commitment to excellence that we work to instill in every ACU graduate.”
