Wildcat-to-Cowboy transformation continues

Aston Whiteside

Two former Abilene Christian University football players continue to make progress while chasing their dream of playing for the NFL team they rooted for as youngsters: the Dallas Cowboys.

Aston Whiteside is arguably the best defensive lineman to ever play in the Lone Star Conference, or at least in a generation. The 6-2, 257-pound multiple-time all-America end, however, seems to best fit the Cowboys’ personnel plans as a linebacker. He is drawing rave reviews from coaches and teammates for his agility and ability to make what would be a difficult position transition for most defensive players. Dallas signed him as a free agent shortly after the 2012 NFL Draft this spring. He was one of the main reasons why 15 NFL teams sent scouts to campus to watch ACU’s Pro Day on April 3.

Raymond Radway is reportedly near the form he showed last summer when he came within moments of making Dallas’ regular season roster, only to fall awkwardly while trying to catch a pass in the team’s final preseason game with the Miami Dolphins. The broken leg he suffered with three seconds left forced him to the team’s injured reserve list for a year. Now the 6-3, 193-pound speedster (a four-time all-America 400-meter star on the ACU track and field team) is back at Valley Ranch and once again turning heads with the speed (4.4 in the 40-yard dash) and athleticism (38″ vertical jump) that wowed coaches in 2011.

Many thanks to photographer James Smith for use of the images from his coverage of the Cowboys.
