Motivational speaker and author Nika Maples (’96) suffered a lupus-induced stroke that led to quadriplegia during her sophomore year at Abilene Christian University. She recently returned to campus to share the story of her journey of hope and recovery.

“The courage Nika showed in battling against a disease that nearly killed her is truly inspirational,” says Craig Fisher (’92), director of alumni relations and annual projects. “She is a great example of the kind of godly servant-leader we prepare our students to become.”

Maples’ book, Twelve Clean Pages, tells the story of her miraculous recovery and the lessons she learned through a time of immense struggle. Maples, who teaches language arts and social studies to fifth-grade students in Keller, Texas, was named Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2007 by the Texas Education Agency.
